What Are COB and SMD Technologies?
SMD (Surface-Mounted Device)
SMD LEDs are first packaged as small individual lamps (LED packages) and then mounted onto a printed circuit board (PCB) using Surface Mount Technology (SMT).
Commonly used in standard LED displays, lighting modules, and LED strips.
Mature technology, relatively low cost, and easy maintenance since each LED can be replaced individually.
COB (Chip-on-Board)
COB integrates multiple bare LED chips directly onto a substrate (PCB or metal base) and encapsulates them as one lighting module.
Offers higher light density, smaller pixel pitch, and a seamless light surface.
Newer and more complex process with higher cost, but provides superior performance in high-end applications.
Key Differences Between COB and SMD
Brightness and Light Density
COB: Delivers higher light density because multiple LED chips are mounted closely on the same substrate.
SMD: Can achieve similar brightness but usually requires more LEDs or a larger module size.
Heat Dissipation and Thermal Management
COB: Excellent thermal performance due to direct chip-to-substrate bonding, resulting in lower thermal resistance.
SMD: Each LED has its own package and solder joints, which can increase heat buildup if not properly designed.
Visual and Pixel Structure
COB: Ideal for ultra-fine pixel pitch LED displays, offering uniform light and a smooth, dot-free surface.
SMD: May show visible pixel dots or granularity at close viewing distances, especially in small pixel pitch setups.
Maintenance
SMD: easy to repair, the individual LEDs can be replaced or repair seperately.
COB: When damaged, the entire module may need replacement due to its integrated design.
Durability and Environmental Resistance
COB: The encapsulated surface provides better resistance to dust, moisture, and physical impact.
SMD: Suitable for standard indoor environments but less robust in harsh or high-humidity conditions.
COB VS. SMD
The COB screen is a surface light source, and the SMD screen is a point light source, so the COB screen has a better visual experience, no graininess, and is more suitable for long-term close-up viewing.
COB has a higher contrast ratio than SMD. When viewed from the front, COB's viewing effect is closer to that of an LCD screen, with brighter colors and better detail.
Due to component size and spacing limitations, SMD displays usually cannot be lower than P1.2.
COB technology is ideal for close-up and high-resolution displays (P0.9, P0.6, and even P0.4), offering wider viewing angles and moiré suppression. It provides a better visual experience and is gentler on the eyes, making it particularly suitable for control rooms, studios, and conference centers.

Best for SMD Technology

Suitable for pixel pitches above P2.5 or installations where the viewing distance is moderate to long.
